• NBCS 2026

National Building Construction Standards 2026, Part F

NBCS 2026 (SP 7:2026) replaced NBC 2016 in April 2026. The following clauses are quoted directly from the published standard.

Part F, Clause 2.22, Note 2

On mandatory exit protection

“Fire doors in exits should have fire rating as required in this Part to meet the requirement of integrity and stability; and the minimum insulation criteria should be 30 min.”

Part F, Clause 2.24

On firefighting shafts

“An enclosed shaft having a protected area of 120 min fire resistance rating comprising a protected lobby, staircase, and fireman's lift... The firefighting shaft should be equipped with 120 min fire doors.”

Part F, Clause 3.5.4.6

On vertical openings and compartmentation

“Every vertical opening between the floors of a building should be suitably enclosed or protected, as necessary, to provide reasonable safety to the occupants... and limitation of damage to the building and its contents.”

Fire curtain performance types, NBCS 2026 + EN standards

NBCS 2026, Clause 4.5.2.1, sets out three fire curtain performance types directly, requiring third-party certification for each. BÖLDT curtains meet these parameters and additionally carry EN certification for international specifiers.

E

Integrity

Resists flame and hot gas passage, 120 min

EW

Radiation control

Heat transfer capped at 15 kW/m² at 1 m

EI

Insulation

Limits far-face temperature rise, +140°C max

Sa

Smoke control

Leakage capped at 3 m³/m/h at 25 Pa

EN 1634-1

Fire Resistance of Door and Shutter Assemblies

Governs fire resistance testing of door sets, shutter assemblies and openable windows - including fire curtain systems. Curtains are evaluated on their ability to maintain integrity and control fire and smoke spread across openings for defined periods.

EN 12101-1

Smoke and Heat Control Systems

Defines performance requirements for smoke and heat control systems in buildings. Curtains tested to EN 12101-1 demonstrate measurable performance in real fire scenarios, supporting life safety strategy and regulatory compliance.

EN 15269-11

Extended Application of Fire Resistance Test Results - Curtain Assemblies

Provides the framework for extending fire test results across a defined range of curtain sizes, widths and installation conditions, rather than requiring independent testing for every configuration.

EN 13501

Fire Classification of Construction Products

Translates fire test results into clearly defined performance ratings - integrity (E), radiation (W) and insulation (I) - giving specifiers, consultants and authorities a transparent, universally understood classification.
